Form Design Tips That Increase Completion Rates

Most forms fail before the first question. Here is what the data says about form design, and how five specific choices increase completion rates by 40% or more.

Form design is a conversion problem. Most people treat it as a UX problem. That confusion is why the average web form has a 67% abandonment rate — people open the form, see what they're dealing with, and leave.

The fix is not adding a progress bar. The fix is understanding what drives abandonment and designing against those specific causes.

1. One Question at a Time Outperforms Multi-Column Layouts

Multi-column forms feel efficient. They look like less work. They are lying to you.

Research consistently shows that single-column, one-question-at-a-time layouts have higher completion rates than multi-column equivalents, even when the multi-column version has fewer visible fields.
